Starting his first year on the Portage varsity basketball team, player Evan Galindo is Portage’s current athlete of the week and athlete in the spotlight.

Previously playing basketball at Andrean high school, this is Galindo’s first year involved with Portage basketball throughout his high school career.

Galindo is a starting player and also holds a captain spot along with other seniors Alex Constandars, Zach Rudd and Stephen Jansen.

“I feel very grateful, he [Coach Snodgrass], gives me the opportunity to lead the team and be trusted with all of the minutes he is giving me,” Galindo said.

Galindo says that when it comes to Coach Snodgrass, he is very passionate. He puts himself and his emotions out on the court for everyone to see.

“He’s one of my inspirations for the season right now. He let me in, gave me a captain spot and is trusting me with all of these duties. Obviously, I am very grateful to him, and I think he is a great guy,” Galindo adds.

Galindo started his basketball career young playing Portage Youth Basketball, and he has been playing ever since.

Playing now at Portage, Galindo says that it feels great to be back where he grew up.

“I get to play with the people that I’ve been playing with since PYB; it feels better than how I was playing before,” Galindo said.

Teammate and sophomore Maurion Martin says that Galindo is a great teammate and is a joy to be around on and off of the court.

“He scores a lot, but he also shares the ball a lot. He is a great factor to the team,” Martin said.

Martin said that Galindo fulfills his spot as one of the captains.

“He does what he’s supposed to, doesn’t argue with other players and he takes charge when we need him to,” Martin said.

While on the court, Galindo says that hearing the crowd cheer for him is one of the greatest feelings.

“If I lead scoring against a team, it doesn’t really matter if you don’t get the win,” Galindo said.

Galindo has many goals for this season, and bettering himself is his main one. He plans on practicing harder in order to help the team. Galindo specifically wants to work on driving to the hoop, and drawing out fouls instead of staying out and shooting from the 3 point line.

“If you make yourself better, you’ll make the team better,” Galindo said.

When it comes to overall team goals for the season, Galindo has many. He plans on helping lead the team to a winning record and a Sectional title.

Galindo has a bittersweet feeling knowing that this is his last year of high school basketball.

“It’s so serious because I didn’t think that it would come this quickly. I’m just trying to make the best out of it,” Galindo said.

Galindo aspires highly to pursue his basketball career after high school and hopes to play in college wherever he decides to go.

Evan is and has always been a gem of an individual. It is worth noting he was raised by a single mother who always believed in his athletic ability and to see his basketball dreams through. We all know he will continue his journey beyond Portage once that opportunity arises out of his college of choice.
