While most people were more focused on the results of the presidential election rather than our local elections, they did take place, and one of the more important positions being voted for was the school board. Two new school board members were elected as a result of voting on Election Day this year.

The two campaigners who were elected are Jessica Bailey and Wilma Vazquez.

Bailey was reelected to the office after defeating Lisa Kettwig and Frances Vega. This will be her second term, after serving as a board member for the last four years.

Vazquez defeated Ron Necco Jr. and Chad Bogue, and will fill the vacant seat on the board.

Bailey has served the last four years on the board, while also owning her own company, Bounce N Around, which delivers bounce houses around Northwest Indiana. She spends time volunteering for organizations such as 500 Turkeys, Portage Porpoise Swim Club and Haven Hallow Harvest Fest.

As a member of the school board, Bailey says she wants to fight for public education and to bring more technological advanced to Portage Township Schools.

Vazquez has thirty-nine years of experience in education between teaching and her current job as an assistant principal at Lincoln Elementary in Hammond. Vazquez was a finalist for the vacant seat after the resignation of member Debra Ekdahl, but Judge Mary Harper ruled the position would remain empty until Election Day.

Vazquez will work on the board to improve our school system and and overcome challenges. Both candidates will begin their term in January.
