Gymnastics team finishes second at LaPorte Pairs

The gymnastics team finished second out of four teams in their competition this Saturday.

The team traveled to LaPorte for the first competition of the season during the cold weather.

Portage was one of four teams to compete. Crown Point, LaPorte and Wawasee were also in attendance. Chesterton and Logansport couldn’t make it due to the weather conditions.

This competition was the only Pairs of the girls’ season. In contrast to regular competitions, each gymnast gets paired up with a partner. One gymnast does two of the four events, the other gymnast does the other two. There are four pairs of two people each, and a total of 16 competing pairs altogether.

Portage had two pairs finish close to the top. Emma Garzella and Johnna Vaughan finished in fifth, while Michaella Drake and Cassie Prohl placed sixth.

Vaughan wasn’t entirely impressed with the team’s performance.

“I think we did alright, but we definitely need improving,” Vaughan said. “It was a good practice meet for us to see what we need to improve on.”

The team will work hard over break to work towards the next competition.

“Over winter break we have longer practices so we’ll be working really hard at those practices,” Vaughn said.

The gymnastics team’s next competition is at home on Jan. 12 against Lake Central.
